ACS/LA GENERAL MEETING
THE
AMERICAN CETACEAN SOCIETY/LOS ANGELES CHAPTER INVITES ALL MEMBERS AND WELCOMES
THE GENERAL PUBLIC TO THIS MONTH’S MEETING ON TUESDAY, APRIL 26, AT 7:30 P.M.
AT THE CABRILLO
MARINE AQUARIUM:

“Are
There New Species of Killer Whales in Antarctica”
b
During the early 1980s, Soviet researchers
described a new species of killer whale from Antarctica that purportedly lived
in the pack ice. But the details were sketchy and over the years the findings
were discredited and largely ignored by cetologists. During whale surveys in
Antarctica over the last decade, I have been looking into the Soviet claims and
I have found evidence that there may in fact be, not just one, but two new
species of killer whales lurking among the ice in the Southern Ocean. I will
present evidence from my ongoing research that maybe we were too hasty in
dismissing the Soviet researchers.
I work as a marine ecologist for NOAA Fisheries, at the Southwest Fisheries
Science Center in La Jolla, CA, specializing in marine birds and mammals. Over
the past 30 years I have participated in over 70 marine mammal survey cruises in
all of the world's oceans. My current research interest is in killer whale
ecology and systematics, which takes me to Alaska and Antarctica each year;
being bipolar has its rewards!
