ACS/LA GENERAL MEETING

THE AMERICAN CETACEAN SOCIETY/LOS ANGELES CHAPTER INVITES ALL MEMBERS AND WELCOMES THE GENERAL PUBLIC TO THIS MONTH’S MEETING ON TUESDAY, MARCH 29, AT 7:30 P.M. AT THE CABRILLO MARINE AQUARIUM:

“California Sea Lions: An Unforgettable Encounter”

b y

Alan De Herrera

The California sea lion has recovered from the hunting pressures of the past and now is fairly common within its range off the West Coast of North America, often to the delight of whale watchers and the chagrin of fishermen. “California Sea Lions: An Unforgettable Encounter” is a 40-minute documentary film that chronicles this species’ recovery as well the perils that still face it.  The film is narrated by actor Sean Astin, and is currently being shown around the country. “Sea Lions” was filmed at seven of the eight California Channel Islands, at Guadalupe Island, at the University of California Santa Cruz Long Marine Lab and at the Pacific Marine Mammal Center in Laguna Beach. DVD and VHS copies will be available for purchase.

In addition to screening the film, Alan De Herrera will talk about the behind the scenes work that went into the making of this documentary and about his company’s current project. De Herrera founded Fullerton–based Rio Films in 2000 to make films to inform people of all ages about the positive and negative effects people are having on the environment through entertaining documentaries. He aims to educate and inspire people to make change. He is currently working on a documentary on the California Channel Islands.
