THE AMERICAN CETACEAN SOCIETY/LOS ANGELES CHAPTER INVITES ALL MEMBERS AND WELCOMES THE GENERAL PUBLIC
TO THIS MONTH’S MEETING ON TUES., SEPTEMBER 24, 2002 AT 7:30 P.M.
AT THE CABRILLO MARINE AQUARIUM:

What's New With the Beaked Whales

by

John Heyning, Ph.D.

Beaked whales are among the most difficult of all cetaceans for humans to study, because they are often shy and elusive and mostly inhabit deep waters. Recently, scientists have enlisted the help of DNA sequencing to establish that four beaked whales that had washed ashore near San Diego in the 1970's, are members of a brand new species, Perrin's beaked whale.

One of the foremost authorities on beaked whales, John Heyning, will present us with an overview of the mysterious family Ziphiidae, and he will also explain the scientific advances that have led to the classification of Mesoplodon perini.

John Heyning is Deputy Director for Research and Collections and Curator of Marine Mammals at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. He is the author of the book "Masters of the Ocean Realm: Whales, Dolphins and Porpoises," and is a regular lecturer at ACS programs.

The Cabrillo Marine Aquarium is located at 3720 Stephen M. White Drive in San Pedro. ACS/LA general meetings are free and are held on the last Tuesday of the month. For an update on the speaker or information about ACS/LA, call (310) 548-8500, or visit our website at www.acs-la.org

Come and meet our speaker in the relaxed surroundings of the Baja Cabana restaurant at our no-host dinner before the meeting. Dinner is at 6 p.m., at 1622 S. Gaffey St. (at 17th St.) in San Pedro. (310) 833-9765.
