"People Who Count: the ACS/LA Census Volunteers" by Alisa Schulman-Janiger et al The ACS/LA Gray Whale Census and Behavior Study has been in operation since 1979, making it the oldest gray whale census in the world. The data obtained has been incorporated into many scientific studies over the years, and has been used by the National Marine Fisheries Service and been presented to the International Whaling Commission. This monumental undertaking is only possible thanks to the effort put forth by a cadre of dedicated volunteers who put in countless hours in often harsh conditions. Come meet the ACS/LA Census Volunteers and find out what it takes to spend day after day out in the elements, binoculars trained on the water, and what the rewards are. The hundreds of volunteers who have staffed the ACS/LA Census over the years come from all walks of life and devote anywhere from a few hours in a single season to literally more than 10,000 hours over many years. They are led by ACS/LA Census Chair Alisa Schulman-Janiger, a marine biology teacher at the San Pedro High School Marine Science Magnet and co-author of the California Killer Whale Catalog. Several of the Census volunteers will talk about their experiences and will share slides and video footage. The Cabrillo Marine Aquarium is located at 3720 Stephen M. White Drive in San Pedro. ACS/LA general meetings are free and are held on the last Tuesday of the month.
