THE AMERICAN CETACEAN SOCIETY/LOS ANGELES CHAPTER INVITES ALL MEMBERS AND WELCOMES THE GENERAL PUBLIC
TO THIS MONTH’S MEETING ON TUES., MAY 28, 2002 AT 7:30 P.M.
AT THE CABRILLO MARINE AQUARIUM:

Whale-lice:the amphipod hitchhikers

by

Todd Haney

Like tiny passengers on a giant spaceship, whale lice travel trough the oceans clinging to large whales. We are most familiar with the tree species that we see as orange patches on the skin of Pacific gray whales, but there are many others, some barely known to science. As the world's leading expert on the whale-lice, Todd Haney is describing new species from newly available material and museum collections, and collaborating with other scientists. He is finishing a description of two species from beaked whales, and also just completed a description of a new species from the short-finned pilot whale, collaborating with researchers from Brazil.

He will touch on a variety of topics in order to give an overview of the group, and will discuss his research on the systematics and diversity of the group. But he will direct most of the discussion to interesting aspects of the morphology and biology of the cyamids -- those tidbits of information of which the audience might not be aware and that local guides might find useful when giving talks to the public.

Todd has a M.S. in Marine Biology from the University of Charleston, SC, and a B. S. in Zoology with a minor in Chemistry from Northern Arizona University. Currently, Todd is a doctoral candidate at the Department of Organismic Biology, Ecology and Evolution at the University of California, Los Angeles. He began his studies on whale-lice for M.S. research at the Grice Marine Laboratory in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1994. He has completed a monograph on the family and continues work on the group today.
