THE AMERICAN CETACEAN SOCIETY/LOS ANGELES CHAPTER INVITES ALL MEMBERS AND WELCOMES THE GENERAL PUBLIC
TO THIS MONTH’S MEETING ON TUES., APRIL 29, 2003 AT 7:30 P.M.
AT THE CABRILLO MARINE AQUARIUM:

"Living with Humpbacks"

by

Sara Graef

Researcher Fred Sharpe of the Alaska Whale Foundation invites you to take a volunteer vacation and join him on his long-term study of humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) in the wilderness of Southeast Alaska. These words introduce the volunteer opportunity on the Sea Quest Expeditions web site. Sara Graef refers to the experience as "the most amazing month of my life."

The Alaska Whale Foundation researchers concentrate their efforts on the Humpback whales of Southeast Alaska, with special emphasis on the communally feeding population in Frederick Sound. Volunteer research assistants play an important role in the field work. Sara Graef took on the challenge in the fall of 2002. She performed all kinds of duties, including cooking, driving the research vessel and assisting with lectures aboard cruise ships. She will show some of her pictures and will share the experience of being in very close contact with whales in a very isolated part of Alaska.

Sara Graef is a professor of music at Cal State LA. She holds a D.M.A. in Composition and a M.M. in Composition from the University of Southern California, and a B.M. in Composition and Flute Performance from Southern Methodist University.
