"Killers and Grays" by Alisa Schulman-Janiger Alisa Schulman-Janiger is one of the authors of "Killer Whales of California and Western Mexico," a pioneering photoidentification catalog published by the National Marine Fisheries Service. She will update us on information that has become available in the almost five years since the catalog was published in 1997. Alisa is also the director of the ACS/LA Gray Whale Census and Behavior Study, the longest running gray whale census in the world. She will give us a mid-season update. Gray whale sightings are up over the past three years and the number of southbound calves has been exceptionally high. There have also been unusual sightings, like a group of lingering fin whales that have been seen very close to shore. Alisa holds several positions within ACS/LA: Board member since 1983; Census Committee Chair; Director of the ACS/LA Gray Whale Census and Behavior Study since 1984; member of Research and Daytrip Committees; Cabrillo Whalewatch instructor, and Whalewatch Program participant for over 20 years. Alisa graduated with a B.S. in Zoology (emphasis in marine biology) and has a Life Science Teaching Credential. She has been a teacher in San Pedro High School’s Marine Science Magnet Program for the past 10 years. The Cabrillo Marine Aquarium is located at 3720 Stephen M. White Drive in San Pedro.
