"Whale Encounters" by James Dorsey ACS/LA member James Dorsey is a writer, artist, photographer, lecturer and world traveler. In June of 1996 he and his wife Irene made their first trip by sea kayak. It was a week of paddling in Johnstone Strait off the coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Within an hour on the water a pod of Orca came right up to them and passed directly under their boats. Since then, James has paddled, canoed or sailed most of the coastal waters from southern Alaska to the southern tip of Baja, and up into the Sea of Cortez with side trips to Hawaii and the Channel Islands. James will show slides and video of his encounters with humpbacks, orcas and gray whales taken from kayaks, canoes, and sailing and motorized vessels. James has had 24 shows of his paintings, most recently at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. His is a director of the Los Angeles Adventurers Club and contributes essays to the Palisades Post. He also writes for the World Surface and Boots N All travel websites and has been published in Traveltales, Alaska and Sea Kayaker Magazine.
